  The Maquis Raider, a converted and armed Ju'Day class Light Freighter, is a mainstay of the Maquis "fleet". The Val Jean, Chakotay's raider, was lost in the Delta Quadrant, having been transported there by the alien Caretaker along with the USS Voyager. Val Jean was named after Jean Val Jean, the main character in the classic novel Les Miserables, which seems to have been an influential book among Eart-descended Maquis. The Maquis Raider variant of the Ju'Day class is 68 metres long; is armed with aft-firing Photon Torpedo launchers and forward-firing Phasers; and carries a crew of seven along with 36 Maquis troops.
