Back in 1989, my friend Bernard Reischl published a 23 page Star Trek technical manual entitled Reischl's Guide to Ships of the Fleet as by the Starfleet Command Intelligence Bureau (S.C.I.B.) through Prometheus Graphics. It included exterior views of the Saberhagen class Defense Substation (above, the Niven class Light Attack Cruiser and an article entitled Sketches From a Starship Designer's Notebook. The article included studies of modular Starfleet cargo tug and its cargo modules, a heavy carrier starship and finally, a preliminary sketch for a border outpost.

The Saberhagen class Defense Substation is a sub-light system defense platform armed with two pulse phaser (megaphaser) turrets, eight photon torpedo launchers and twelve single-mount type-V phasers. It is 128.4m long, with a 61.25m beam and a draught of 50.25m (70.75 with the pulse phasers extended). It has a crew complement of 16 officers and 103 petty officers and ratings; and a small craft complement of two armed light dockport shuttlecraft, 4 workbees and 14 8-place ASRVs (Autonomous Survival and Recovery Vehicles, or escape pods). On Impulse power, it is capable of .66c with an emergency speed of WF 1.45 (3.02c) for brief bursts.

During the CoViD-19 crisis, the nursing home where I live (even Star Trek fans get old) was on isolation so I had a lot of time on my hands and I decided to do a set of deck plans based on these drawings.
