The Renner class Destroyer Escorts came into being because of Starfleet's lack of emphasis on escort and support vessels. They are built to keep up with most Starfleet vessels, but these ships were not built for speed alone. They were built to be fast, accurate fighting vessels. Starfleet approved the construction of 21 vessels starting in 2287' with the future construction of 20-30 more if the originals serve their purpose well.

Along with the Hunt class escort destroyers, the Renner class was designed as a new class to supplement existing classes of starships on border and spacelane patrol duty. Renners are atypical insofar as they have a wedge-shaped (as opposed to ovular) primary hull. The standard crew complement is 180.
