He has recently given up his Presidency to become an interstellar fugitive, having stolen the prototype Infinite Improbability Drive starship, the Heart of Gold from its launch on Damogran—although he claims he can't remember why he did this or why he even ran for President in the first place, which is quite plausible as he spends a lot of time out of his skulls. According to his private brain care specialist, Gag Halfrunt, "Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, y'know?"
Arthur left Zaphod, Ford, and Zarniwoop van Harl stranded with the Ruler of the Universe and his cat, he taking one of the Lintillas with him aboard the Heart of Gold; after he found out that Zaphod, Zarniwoop and a consortium of high-priced psychiatrists led by Gag Halfrunt had authorised the Vogons to destroy the planet Earth to stop the hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings from completing their experiment to discover the Ultimate Question to Life, the Universe and Everything (to which the answer is 42).
