Möbius was born Edward Morbius on Earth in 2133. As a child, he experienced the horrors of WWIII and became disenchanted with Humanity. In 2163, Morbius migrated to Altair V on the early colony ship Bellerophon. In transit, he fell in love with Julia Marsin, a biochemist, and they were married by the ship's captain. On Altair IV the colonists discovered a ruin left by an ancient race called the Krell. Using the instrumentalities left behind by the Krell, he increased his brain power by several orders of magnitude, eventually unleashing the destructive powers of his own mind, killing the entire colony save for Morbius and his infant daughter Altaira. In 2185 the Starfleet cruiser USS Excalibur, NCC-57, commanded by Captain J.J. Adams, discovered Morbius and his daughter. His unconscious resentment of Altaira's interest in Adams once again released his mental powers, and the ship narrowly escaped. Morbius was believed killed and the ruins destroyed. Altair IV is now a Federation world, having subsequently been colonised by Earth. Federation scientists are still studying the cavity left by the destruction of the Krell instrumentalities.

Edward Morbius did not, however, die. The Krell instrumentalities' destruction opened a rift in the time-space continuum and Morbius found himself in a void at the centre of the Nexus, an alternate dimensional realm. His experiments with the Krell instrumentalities had increased his mental abilities to a point where he was able to survive the journey into the central Nexus alive and aware, and leave it on his own power. This brought him to the attention of Yaskoydray, who took him as an apprentice. Morbius, now a being of incredible power, adopted the name Möbius, eventually became Yaskoydray's trusted aide and heir.

Yaskoydray was an ascended energy being on a level with the Organians or the Q Continuum. He created the assistants from his own race, known as The Ancients. These assistants called themselves the Children of the Grandfather. They helped him build the Ring of Pearls and other massive constructs such as the Dyson Sphere.

The Ghildren eventually rebelled against the Grandfather. Yaskoydray hunted down his children some 250,000 years ago and either killed or imprisoned them in bubble universes. A very few of them escaped and have been in hiding. They are known in the Havenic Imperial Federation as the Droyne.

Yaskoydray was believed to have been recently (by Möbius' subjective time) killed by Crown Prince Tristan of the Havenic Imperial Federation. Since then, Möbius has been taking stock of Yaskoydray's projects and bringing them under his control.

There are three factions of Yaskoydray's minions vying with Möbius for control of Yaskoydray's projects - the Finori and the Kapecki and a mysterious group of beings called the Mellor, offshoots of his genetic experiments. He recently brought a series of bubble universes known as The Ring of Pearls under control. A deceased Starfleet officer, Lieutenant Natasha Yar, was brought back to life as a result of experiments conducted by the Briori in the Ring. Möbius has allowed her to return to her own universe, and she is currently inside the Dyson Sphere while she figures out what she is going to make of her restored life.
