- Born on Harvich's World, oldest of eight children born to a traditionalist couple, Senator Vasura Tonge and her husband, Marchal Hisetti, a doctor. Picked up when, despite their best efforts, the world went Com twenty-two years ago. Some connected friends got her smuggled to Gnoshi spaceport when they nabbed the rest of her family, and placed her in the custody of Mak Hung Chang, a freighter captain who was bribed to get her to safety. Citizen Chang pocketed the money and raised her himself, after getting a disbarred doctor to alter her appearance more in line with the captain's. Maki Chang was arrested for smuggling prohibited items into Comworlds, leaving Mavra to find her own way on the barbarian world of Kaliva at the age of thirteen. She made it by doing just about everything, legal and illegal. She met and fell in love with a handsome freighter captain named Gimball Nysongi at the age of nineteen. Nysongi was killed by muggers on Basada three years later, after which she ran the Assateague alone.
- Mavra Chang was a freelance operative/freighter pilot hired to rescue Gilgam Zinder’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by Antor Trelig, and to save the worlds populating the construct from Trelig’s malicious plans. In the process, Obie, the self–aware computer, accidentally causes a whole world to be automatically transported around the Well World, causing Mavra’s ship to crash on a “non-tech” hex-world. As inhabitants of surrounding hex-worlds start to realize what is going on, they scramble to collect the pieces of the scattered ship in the hope of escaping the planet, resulting in a chaotic war between various races that might lead to the destruction of the Well World itself.
Mavra was captured by the Olborn and partially converted into a beast of burden. In the next twenty-two years, she did not try to escape, finally attempting and succeeding with help from the crew of a supply ship. Moreover, one of two tiny hopes has already been destroyed. Two ships had crashed into the Well World: hers in the south and another in the inhospitable Northern Hemisphere. The attempt to recover her ship ended in the destruction of that ship. But a possible method of traveling to the North may offer a final hope and it ignited a new race between Mavra and her enemies—with the winner poised to gain control of Obie, the super-computer that can manipulate the very fabric of existence.
After escaping the Well World with Obie and a cure to the sponge, Obie faked his own destruction after Mavra had delivered the cure to the Com. Mavra and Obie relocated to the M51 Galaxy.
