The U.S.S. Challenger NCC-74695 is an Intrepid class Cruiser. Her captain is Zyrena Myrissaw, former captain of the U.S.S. St. Roch NCC-1940, a Miranda class Cruiser presumed lost in 2296, which appeared in the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2370. It was severely damaged and under attack by a Klingon warship. It was saved by the Romulan Warbird Executor and escorted out of the Neutral Zone.
The crew of the St. Roch underwent an intensive debriefing at Starfleet Headquarters, and technical upgrade courses at Starfleet Academy; though the ship was unsalvageable. The crew was reassigned to the Challenger after reorientation to the 24th century. On SD50893.5 (2373) the Challenger was assigned to the task force assigned to fight off the Second Borg Attack on Sector 0/0/1. As the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E followed the Borg Sphere into the temporal vortex, so too did the Challenger. While the Enterprise followed the Sphere further back to the year 2061, the Challenger suffered a loss of Warp power and remained stranded in an alternate timeline where the Borg has succeeded in foiling Cochrane's First Contact and assimilating the entire planet, thus preventing the eventual formation of the United Federation of Planets.
Borg-assimilated Earth (2373)
For two solar years the Challenger fought alongside a ragtag collection of Resistance Powers including the Tellarites, Andorians and Romulans against the consolidated Borg Collective. After destroying Unimatrix 0-0-1, the Challenger was able to return to Sector 0/0/1 and use the Temporal Slingshot Manœuvre to backtrack along the timeline and observe the Enterprise defeat the Borg Sphere. They then followed in the temporal wake of the Enterprise to 2373, purposely overshooting by two years to early 2376 to maintain their internal chronology. The Challenger was escorted to Starbase 21 for repairs and debriefing before being reassigned.
