- Max was raised in a religious Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York on Earth, and originally trained to be a rabbi, but Borg attack on Earth in early 2367 prompted him to enlist in Starfleet. He picked up his nickname, Blue Max, on his first day at Starfleet Academy when the training officer called out, "Blume, Maxwell!" The Blue Max, also known as the Pour la Mérite, was a high award for valour during Earth's First World War worn by many German "aces," including Manfred von Richtofen.
Max specialised in Flight Control and attended Advanced Tactical School at the Academy. His Cadet Cruise was spent on the USS Venture patroling the Romulan Neutral Zone. He spent his first Tour running combat missions, first against the Klingon Empire, then the Cardassian Union and finally the Dominion. many of his friends and comrades died in combat against the Jem'Hadar.
With the attack on Dyson Base, Lieutenant Blume was transferred to the Sphere, where he fears that he will not be able to participate in the final thrust against the Dominion. He has faith, however, that God has placed him here for a purpose.

- Max is of medium height and build. A religious Jew, he wears a yarmulke at all times and has had the replicators programmed with a wide variety of kosher dishes. When permitted by his duties, he observes the Sabbath as rigourously as possible.
Max is a keen player of Parises Squares, and is pleased to have found several other afficionadoes of the sport at Dyson Base.
