- M'el's parents were Federation diplomats who served on Andor and Earth. His twin brother M’Rek is currently serving in the Federation diplomatic corps.
M’Rel originally wanted to enter the Tactical stream at Starfleet Academy, but was talked out of it by his father, who pointed out that more command officers came out of Flight Control. However, tactical operations and weaponry still hold a fascination for M’Rel. There is a sibling rivalry between the brothers as M’Rel always felt that M’Rek was the favourite since he'd entered the Diplomatic Corps rather than Starfleet. M’Rel feels a need to make up for his career choice by achieving command rank as soon as possible.
While in Academy, M'Rel took an interest in small arms.
