- His parents still live on Bajor. He has two older brothers and one young sister. His oldest brother is following his strong religious believes. His middle brother has not been in contact with his family since the death of his Aunt and Uncle's family at the hands of the Cardassians (they were in the resistance and were discovered.) It is believed that he is in the Marquis. His young sister is following his footstep in Starfleet and is currently in the academy. He still has some resentment towards his parents for not coming to his aunt and uncle's help, more so their children, which were the same age as him. Bern knows deep down that if his parents had helped they would all be dead as well. Because of this he has developed a deep hatred towards the Cardassians.
Seth studied Temporal Sciences at the Vulcan Science Academy in early 2376.
While assigned to Dyson Base, Seth became embroiled in a series of interdimensional missions which led to his current assignement searching for the Jedi Knight Juran. Seth's cover is that he is in disgrace, when in fact he has been promoted to full Lieutenant.

- Bern is quite religious himself but does not wear an earring while on duty. (Except with his dress uniform or on religious holidays.) As a child he had a great knack for drawing but never pursued it as a career. Instead joining Starfleet to help correct the injustice that the Cardassians did towards the Bajorans during the occupation.
He feels he could kill a Cardassian for simply breathing the same air he does (but never has). Seth's current assignment allows him to wear civilian clothing. He affects a quiet, sober clothing reflecting his assumed persona, and wears his Bajoran earring.
