<Sample Character Conversion

Next, we establish the characters Advantages and Disadvantages, collectively known as Traits. These are more subjective than Attributes and Skills, being derived mostly from the Background and Personality notes for the character. One exception is the Zero-G Training Advantage, which is determined by whether the FASA character had the Zero-G Operations Skill.

First, we look at the character's Rank and Posting information. Dr. Driveon is a Commander in Starfleet, and a Department Head on a large starship.

Next, we look at his background. He joined Starfleet rather than take up private practice, so we'll give him the Codes of Honour (Hippocratic Oath) and (Starfleet). He wone the Legion of Merit (Commendation +2) for saving the lives of over 30 crewmen at the Battle of Kyros.

Finally, we look at his personality. He's a bit of a practical joker aided by his good friend Lieutenant Commander V'Shall. His habit of constantly wearing his medal at all times indicates a bit of an arrogant streak.

This gives the good doctor the following Traits:

Advantages
Ally (LCdr. V'Shall) (+1)
Commendation (Legion of Merit) (+2)
Department Head (Chief Medical Officer) (+4)
Famous Incident (The Battle of Kyros) (+2)
Promotion (Commander) (+8)
Zero-G Training (+2)

Disadvantages
Arrogant (-1)
Code of Honour (Hippocratic Oath) (-2)
Code of Honour (Starfleet Code) (-4)

Finally, we come to the ICON system-specific statistics. Courage defaults to the basic value in the ICON Species Template (5 for Humans) and Resistance equals the character's Fitness + Vitality. Renown is extremely subjective, normally being awarded during play, but we can assign Renown values based on the Promotion guidelines in the ICON Star Trek, The Next Generation Core Game Book, modified by the Background and Personality notes. A Commander in Starfleet is expected to have 40 Renown, 25 of which should be in Starfleet-favoured Aspects. He won a 2-point Commendation, worth 4 points in Openness, during a minor battle, worth an additional 3 points in Skill. His fondness for practical jokes nets him -2 Discipline Renown. Note that negative Renown is tracked separately from positive Renown, and the total Renown is the sum of all Renown Aspects. Negative Renown adds to total Renown rather than subtracting.

Dr. Driveon's stats are thus:

Other Statistics
Courage: 5
Renown: 49
Aggression: 0
Discipline: 10 / -2
Initiative: 10
Openness: 14
Skill: 13
Resistance: 2
