Alpha Centauri is a trinary star system consisting of the three companion stars Rigil Kentaurus, Quindar and Proxima. At a little over four light years distant, this is the closest star system to Earth in the Sol system. By the 24th century, the system's three inhabited planets and various space stations and outposts supported a population of over 21 billion sentient individuals.
It is located in the Beta Quadrant.
System: Alpha Centauri is a trinary star system located about 4.33 light years from Sol. As a system, Alpha Centauri consisted of a binary pair of stars, Alpha Centauri A and B, and a third, more distant companion, Alpha Centauri C or "Proxima Centauri". This system is the closest stellar neighbor to the Sol system, and the site of the Alpha Centauri outpost. The Federation worlds here are sometimes also referred to simply as Alpha Centauri.
History Although there was a native Centauri race, believed to heve been seeded by the Preservers, Humans had established an outpost in the Alpha Centauri system by the early 22nd century. Among its residents during this time was warp drive developer Zefram Cochrane, who moved to the system from Earth sometime following his historic test flight of the Phoenix in 2063. He left the system in 2119 for an unknown destination. He was presumed dead in space. In 2338, Starfleet science officer Greta Vanderweg was born in the Alpha Centauri system. During the Dominion War, Alpha Centauri was a pivotal planet in the Federation's defense, with its supply lines to Vulcan being the Federation's "life's blood". Later in the war, Alpha Centauri, along with Vulcan, Andor and Tellar Prime, was threatened by the fall of Betazed to the Dominion.
