Prime Teams feature prominently in the Prime Directive series of RPGs (ADB's Prime Directive; and PD Gurps, PD20 and PD20 Modern, all produced under license). in the Star Trek: Universe series of campaigns, I decided to introduce the concept of such a Mission: Impossible-style commando team. Composed of 4-8 Starfleet personnel (and sometimes the odd civilian specialist) from a selection of service branches, Prime Teams often operate behind enemy lines. Based on starships or stations, and occasionally assigned to a fleet, they use a small ship to arrive at their assigned operational position. This ship serves as their base of operations and means of exfiltration. Usually a multi-species unit, a Prime Team typically consists of a Command Officer, a Sciences/Medical Officer, an Engineer, one or more marines, and often an Intelligence officer.

The Black Eagles are the team given as an example in the original Prime Directive rulebook.

A common Prime Team Insertion Ship is a modified civilian Monitor class Scout. Lightly armed, the insertion ship carries a Type 05 Shuttlecraft, seven APM Worksuits and two Light Attack Vehicles; and is capable of high Warp velocities. Though uncloaked, it is built of low-observable materials and had a full suite of electronic and subspace counter-measures. It has six cabins and can carry up to eight crew members.
