Joining Starfleet with the intent of becoming a member of the elite rapid response teams, he was instead recruited by Starfleet Intelligence. He spent his cadet cruise and first tour as a covert courier, before attending advanced tactical school. His next tour was spent as an intelligence officer with the rapid response forces during the Klingon and Cardassian Wars.
