The Aerie class Research Vessel was seen in the Star Trek Voyager episodes The Raven and Dark Frontieras the SS Raven NAR-32450, the vessel used by Magnus and Erin Hansen and their daughter Annika to search for information on the Borg, leading to their assimilation in 2354. The Raven bore the prefix SS, indicating its origin as a civilian vessel, but was attatched to Starfleet, leading to the prefix USS being used on its LCARS readouts and in its log recordings. Further, the official records indicate "According to arrival/departure log from the Drexler outpost in sector Omega exploration vessel Jefferies left that location in 2354" - the Raven presumably was given the cover name of Jefferies for security reasons. The ship was originally shown as a skeletal wreck on moon in B'omar space in the Agrat-Mot Nebula, but was subsequently shown operational in flashback sequences.

The ship, according to Rick Sternbach, has only four decks, but the MSD shows five decks. Samuel Kowal posted a very nice set of blueprints on the DeviantArt site with four decks, but although the MSD clearly shows a shuttlebay housing a Type 6 Shuttlecraft, he did not include it. With his gracious permission, I have based my drawings on his blueprints, though I have shown five decks and have added the shuttlebay. I used the basic layouts of his four decks, using his deck 1 as my deck 0 and his deck 2 as my deck 1, placing the shuttlebay on his deck 3 to form my deck 2, combined the plans for his decks 3 and 4 to produce my deck 3, and used his deck 4 layout as my deck 4. The holodeck was represented in Star Trek, the Next Generation's Encounter at Farpoint as being a new technology for starships (presumably it had been available only for stations previously and/or in a more primitive fashion), so I have assumed that it was installed specifically for the Raven's mission, possibly diverted from the then-new Galaxy class Explorers. Later-built Aerie class vessels would have it as it became first available and then commonplace. The holodeck comprises parts of decks 2-4, forming a single cube-shaped room.
