The studio model for the USS Buckner was built by Adam Buckner. It was a "quick'n'dirty" kitbash originally done to be a backgound ship in the Dominion War sequences on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, but it was decided to make it a featured ship in the episode A Time to Stand, pursuing Captain Sisko in his captured Jem'Hadar attack ship. The USS Centaur NCC-42043 was commanded by Captain Charlie Reynolds.

The model consisted of an Excelsior class primary hull, with engines made of the bottom halves of two sets of Excelsior nacelles. These were attached to the ends of a Miranda class rollbar turned backwards and mounted under the aft end of the saucer. The saucer was topped by a Miranda class bridge module and the hangar deck off the fantail of the Excelsior. According to Buckner, the ship should be scaled to the Miranda class components rather than the saucer. This results in a ship which measures 210 metres, as opposed to a ship measuring 386 metres as it would if scaled to the Excelsior saucer.
