The Whilwind class Assault Ship carries two Type 04 Shuttlecraft, two Type 05 Shuttlecraft and 28 Starfighters.

The Type 04 Shuttlecraft is identical to those carried aboard the Miranda class Cruiser. This shuttle is commonly called the "Saratoga Escape Pod" by fans (and Paramount's licensees) even though it's quite obviously a large shuttlecraft since it was used for an emergency evacuation of the USS Saratoga during the Borg attack at Wolf 359. "Escape Pods" are small, spartan dedicated lifeboats used for evacuation during emergencies necessitating that the crew abandon ship. A ship's small craft are of course used in emergency situations as evacuation craft—having a large, fully-capable shuttlecraft idle most of the time would be wasteful... Although the original blueprint package specifies two "cargo shuttlecraft", they can be reconfigured as troop shuttles for deploying occypation forces. Indeed, the Type 04 is so versatile that it remained in service for the next century.

The Type 05 Shuttlecraft, also known as the Galileo type is the standard Starfleet shuttlecraft in the latter quarter of the 22nd century. Like the Type04, it remained in service for a century, albeit with upgrades and a more luxurious interior.

The standard Federation Starfighter would later be used as a flight training vehicle at Starfleet Academy, using the obsolete but still serviceable eight-decade-old starfighters to familiarise cadets with advanced small-craft flight control techniques. Known as the Academy Flight Trainer in the 24^th century, it began life as a two-place (Pilot and WSO—Weapons/Sensor Officer) light attack craft. In its original configuration, it was armed with a Type IV Phaser Cannon and high-gain sensors. It had enhanced shields, inertial dampers and structural integrity field, and was capable of extreme manœuvres at up to .95c on Impulse power alone, although it lacked Warp drives. When the Dominion War broke out, only several dozen of the converted spaceframes remained in service (fighters having fallen out of favour due to the cessation of hostilities with the Klingons and the withdrawal of the Romulan Star Emipre from galactic affairs), so Starfleet Tactical took a cue from the Maquis guerrillas and armed the plentiful Peregrine class Light Couriers to fill the role.
