The mission of the Whilwind class Assault Ship is to provide troops for the immediate occupation of planets after enemy troops have withdrawn, and if necessary to attack occupied planets. The ship is designed to function with only one third of it's crew complement. The remaining two thirds can be used for temporary planetary occupation duties they can remmain there until relieved by regular occupation troops. The ship can also act as a independant raider. It has the power and speed to outfight or outrun all but the best frontline Klingon warships.

Deflector shield units are spaced at intervals an the ships hull. Each can draw power instantaneously from the other units, when they are touched by high energy sources such as disruptor fire, and photon torpedoes.
All transporters on this ship have a special device incorporated into them. This device enables the transporter to be set so that it can transport from one to twenty-two persons at a time, It also has the capability to scatter them over a wide area for invasion purposes.
The Federation Starfighters carried by this ship are a newly developed type. They are designed to provide mobile weapons support to troops on the ground, supplementing the weapons on the Whilwind. They are heavily armed and are highly manoeuvrable within an atmosphere. The capabilities of these starfighters and their general design remain classified.
All device such as lights, gravity units, air conditioners, doors, etc. are run on rechargeable power cells. These cells require recharge once every two years.
Emergency equipment is contained in wall lockers which are located at various places on each deck. Items contained in
each locker are a medical kit, phaser, tricorder, communicator and environmental suit.
This is the first military warship to have an anti-grav pool. It has been a common entertainment feature on civilian passenger liners for many years. This pool combines the use of water vapour and the absence of gravity. Water vapor is fed into the room and in the absence of gravity scatters it all about the room providing a sensation similar to that of swimming.
The Whilwind is 264m long and masses 100,000t. It is surfboard-shaped and has two aft-mounted warp nacelles. It carries 2 Type 04 shuttlecraft outfitted as cargo shuttles, though they can be fitted for troop transport if required, two Type 05 personnel shuttles and 28 starfighters. It has a safe cruising speed of Warp 6 and an emergency speed of Warp 8. The crew complement is 300 officers and ratings.

The Whilwind class USS Whilwind NCC-6000 Assault Ship General Plans was a set of 18 legal-sized (8½x14") blueprints published in 1979 by a fan named Daniel Biringer. Done in the days before personal computers were unbiquitous, they were hand-drawn with typed labels. They were representative of fan-made blueprints of the day, obviously inspired by the famous Franz Joseph USS Enterprise Deck Plans. Being done by an amateur with little or no training in draughting, they were still serviceable enough for fandom and role-playing games which were just becoming popular (GDW's Traveller® "little black books" edition a.k.a Classic Traveller had only come out in early 1977).
Daniel also came out with a variety of other sets of blueprints, among them the Voltara class USS Voltara NCC-G400 Supply Ship General Plans - 1976, the Graynet class USS Graynet NCC-5010 Patrol Ship General Plans - 1977, the Automated Bulk Freighter General Plans - 1977 and the Starship Dock: Type S-4000 General Plans - 1977; all in the same format: a sheaf of legal-sized photocopied blueprints in a white paper envelope.
