The Romulan Star Empire is one of the Galactic Powers bordering the Triangle. The primary species in the Star Empire is the Romulan species. Romulans are descendants of renegade Vulcans who fled the planet nearly 2000 years ago. They greatly resemble their Vulcan cousins, though they have developed minor forehead ridging, and the pointed ears are often less elegant. They also have not developed the psionic powers of the Vulcans, and do not repress their emotions. A sister planet, named Remus, houses the Reman species, a servitor race used as shock troops by the Romulan military.

The Romulan Star Empire is separated from the United Federation of Planets by the Romulan Neutral Zone, a parsec deep buffer zone. No military vessels from either power are permitted to cross into the Neutral Zone except under specific conditions.
The capital world of the Romulan Star Empire is Romulus. A secondary world, Remus, is the tidally-locked mining planet home to the Remans. A major shipbuilding and military center is found on the planet Romii. Recently, in the wake of the defeat of Shinzon's coup, Commander Donatra used the forces she'd amassed in opposition to Shinzon to found the breakaway Imperial Romulan State, based on Achernar Prime.

Romulans utilise a similar range of equipment as do their Federation and Klingon counterparts. Commonly used are Disruptor Pistols and Rifles, equivalent to Federation Phasers; and Tricorders.

The signature ship of the Romulan Star Empire used to be the Bird-of-Prey class light cruiser with its distinctive paint-job, but they no longer use this ship or the distinctive markings, preferring to use Klingon-style feather plating.
Being somewhat resource poor, the Romulan Star Empire uses a smaller number of ship types, from the small science and scout vessels to the much larger Warbirds. While these are in shorter supply that their Federation counterparts, they are used ruthlessly and efficiently.

Romulans also use a small, runabout-sized warpshuttle called the Charon class; and a 2-place fighter called the Scorpion, crewed by Remans, whom the Romulans use as shock troops.

The Romulan Star Empire rules with an iron fist. The Romulan Navy, Tal Shiar, Tal Dian and Romulan Army have a well-developed and strictly observed rank structure. Click on the tab below to see the Romulan Rank stucture and insignia.
Romulan politics seethes with intrigue. Prætors rarely last more than a few years before being deposed in favour of the newest kid on the block. The current Prætor is Tal'aura, who succeeded the recently deceased Hiren. An unnamed Senator and his half-Human daughter Sela have built a power-base within the tal Shiar, and former Starfleet officer Ambassador Spock has been involved in an underground movement favouring reunification with Vulcan, foiled by Senator Pardek. During the Dominion War, Senator Vreenak was assassinated by the Cardassians. Admiral Tomalok has been central to many confrontations with the Federation. In 2368, factions within the Star Empire supported the Duras sisters and their nephew Toral in a bid to overthrow the Klingon High Council. Shinzon assassinated the Continuing Comittee and attempted a coup, after which Donatra formed the Imperial Romulan State. |
