With him was Trillian, a Human woman from Earth, whom he had met at a party in Islington and invited her along, saying, "Hey, baby, come with me. I'm from a whole different planet!" Marvin was part of the ship's complement of Sirius Cybernetics equipment and is a Genuine People Personality prototype unit.
When the Vogons destroyed Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Arthur Dent was rescued from the Vogon demolition beams by Ford Prefect, a researcher for the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, stowing away on the Vogon Bureaux class Constructor Ship Business End. When the two were thrown out of the Vogon airlock, they were improbably rescued by the Heart of Gold and after many adventures, Arthur left Zaphod, Ford, and Zarniwoop van Harl stranded with the Ruler of the Universe and his cat, taking Lintilla with him aboard the Heart of Gold.
